Rosa strikes back speaks out! Bush, dude, really, why don’t you get cancer and see how difficult a road it is to travel. All those that have dealt with it first or second hand know the pain involved. Blah. Stupid first and only veto.

Rosa DeLauro: The President’s First Veto
=================

Dear Friends,

As you know, last week, President Bush issued the first veto of his presidency. With this power, he chose to veto legislation that would have expanded the hope of stem cell research for millions of American families.

By rejecting this legislation, President Bush was denying the clear will of the American people and bipartisan majorities in Congress, who believe that stem cell research should continue. Both the House and the Senate immediately attempted to override his veto, but fell short of the two-thirds majority necessary for this effort.

I spoke on the House floor during consideration of the veto override. You can watch that speech by clicking on the picture below.

As a survivor of ovarian cancer, I know the power of biomedical research: it saved my life. At the same time, I believe that there are important moral considerations surrounding stem cell research. Yet I find it difficult to support the destruction of frozen embryos that were created for fertility purposes, when so much suffering could be relieved by continued research performed under carefully crafted ethical guidelines. Please click here to read more about the bill that the president rejected and the ethical safeguards it provided.

Please take a moment to watch this speech and to share this email with your friends and family. As always, I welcome your thoughts, concerns, and ideas.

Sincerely,

Rosa DeLauro
