Battlefront: Connecticut During World War II, a new CPTV Original, is a 60-minute documentary that follows the heroic and often-tragic experiences of men and women from Connecticut who served in the armed forces during World War II. Battlefront uses interviews, extraordinary personal letters, and vivid combat footage never before broadcast to bring the story of the war home to Connecticut for the very first time.

Battlefront is the second episode of a documentary trilogy entitled Connecticut During World War II by producer, writer and director Rich Hanley. The trilogy is the first to tell the detailed true story of how Connecticut and its people helped to win the war for the Allies.

We uncovered stories that have not been told by veterans who before now were hesitant to speak about their experiences, said Hanley. Their stories will now be heard for the first time.

Battlefront navydeckConnecticut soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines fought in every major battle of the war. More than 210,000 Connecticut men and 3,300 women saw service in World War II, including 75,000 volunteers. From the fields and factories of the state to burial grounds in Europe and Asia, Connecticut residents committed their lives and livelihoods to the war effort against Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany. Connecticut residents served at Pearl Harbor and engaged the enemy in land, sea and air battles throughout the conflict. They took part in the North Africa campaign, invaded Italy, crawled over the volcanic ash of Iwo Jima, stormed Okinawa, and waded ashore at Normandy. Almost 2,600 were killed in action. Nine earned the Congressional Medal of Honor.

In addition to interviews with dozens of veterans, Hanley pored over thousands of letters to reveal the personal nature of combat despite the global nature of the war.

Connecticut During World War II serves as the fundamental record of what happened in the state during the years 1941-1945 when the world was at war. Episode One, entitled Home Front: Connecticut During World War II, was co-produced by CPTV and the Connecticut Humanities Council. It premiered in December 2001 on CPTV.

Production experience

My first voice over experience. Being in the booth playing with my voice getting it to do things I wasn’t expecting was positively brilliant. More please.

I wish there were an easier and cheaper way to get a copy of the show but CPTV wants $60 for a VHS copy of the show.
