Production experience
I cannot say much about this show that is anything but glowing. The cast, the crew, the audience. Everything was near perfect every night. It felt like everyone stepped up to the plate ready to crush the game winning hit with the team on their side ready to cheer them on.
I remember reaching down to grab a crop that was supposed to be under a bench so I could create the live sound effect. It was missing. So, knowing the effect was needed, I slapped, and slapped, and slapped my hand against my tall leather boots until the scene as over. It was the end of Act I so we walked off for a short break. I looked at my hand and saw that I popped a blood vessel. My thumb had swollen and everyone was confused why it happened. They all thought I had the crop.
It was that kind of intensity that took place on stage every night. Sure the drive was horrible due to traffic. Sure I hated sitting in my car stuck with nowhere to go on my way to and from rehearsal. The late night rehearsals during tech week were brutal but the result… Wow.
When I left that show I left New Zenith as I had come to know it. I was studying at Sarah Lawrence College now. I needed to focus my energies in new directions. I cried on the way home. It was one of the saddest moments. I was so lucky to have been able to do the show despite working and living in NY. I don’t know if a show will impact me like it did. The history of New Zenith and NVCC culminated into my sad farewell. I miss Equus.
